The Indian parliament recently passed the National Nursing and Midwifery Commission Bill as part of a comprehensive reform to strengthen and regulate the quality of nursing education and practice to benefit the health of Indian families.
The introduction of the National Nursing and Midwifery Commission Bill is a significant milestone in bolstering nursing and midwifery education, skills, and services in India. The Bill introduces numerous vital clauses to elevate the quality of nursing education and services, enhance professional conduct, and ensure increased openness and responsibility.
“We welcome this landmark step towards building a more transformative ecosystem of quality health education and skilled health workforce of nursing and midwifery cadre in India,” said Dr. Somesh Kumar, Country Director, Jhpiego India.
The Bill aims to establish the National Nursing and Midwifery Commission (NNMC) as a critical entity proposing comprehensive reforms in the nursing sector.
The National Commission will consist of three distinct boards and a national advisory council providing state-territory representation and guidance on nursing-related areas.
