Miswaki Village, Tanzania—When Helena Paschal’s water broke, she was alone. There was no trained midwife available, and the nearest clinic was 55 miles away. Helena delivered her baby without help. As a last resort, she had to use a kitchen knife to cut the umbilical cord.
She survived. Unfortunately, her baby did not. Later, Helena healed and became pregnant again. This time, she received support from Jhpiego. By the December holidays, her baby girl, Neema, born prematurely, had grown to be a healthy 4-month-old weighing 16 pounds.
This room is a testament to their story.
