Why Focus on Reproductive Health?
Expanding access to family planning is essential for improving health, advancing gender equality, and fostering economic and social development. It allows individuals—especially women and girls—to make informed decisions about if and when to have children, leading to healthier families, greater educational and economic opportunities, and more resilient communities. Expanding access builds more equitable and resilient communities by reducing disparities and empowering people with tools to live and thrive.
Yet millions of people still lack access to modern contraception and reproductive health care.
We work tirelessly to ensure that people get the care they need to build a world where everyone, regardless of background, has the freedom and support to shape their own future. We work to make sure everyone can access the contraceptive care they want—when, where, and how they need it.
Our efforts focus on three major areas: Improving the quality and reach of services, expanding contraceptive choices, and building an environment that supports reproductive health. This work is carried out in partnership with governments, private sector actors, local organizations, and the communities in which the work takes place.
In 2023, 1,350,794 women voluntarily initiated postpartum family planning through Jhpiego-supported programs.

How We Make an Impact
We help bring family planning services closer to where people live and make sure they’re delivered with care and respect. That means developing health workers’ capacity, partnering with private clinics, and using mobile and digital approaches to reach people who’ve been left out—especially in hard-to-reach contexts.
We support efforts to expand the range of contraceptive options available and ensure that everyone gets clear, unbiased information to make the best decision for themselves. We also help create respectful, person-centered care where individuals feel heard and supported.
We work with governments and communities to strengthen policies, improve data use, and bolster social norms that expand people’s choices. By creating systems and cultures that support reproductive choice, we help ensure lasting impact.
Technical approach to family planning & reproductive health
Jhpiego’s goal is to ensure that all individuals’ sexual and reproductive health and rights are respected, protected, and fulfilled. To achieve this vision, Jhpiego follows a multipronged approach. We work to understand providers’ and clients’ knowledge, attitudes, behavior, and social norms surrounding family planning and reproductive health at various points in their lives; use these insights and our clinical expertise in integrating health services to optimize organization and delivery of family planning and reproductive health services; and create an environment that supports provision and continued use of these services. Our initiatives and efforts aim to overcome barriers to access and bend the curve toward ensuring high-quality, safe, and effective family planning and reproductive health services for all.
