Throughout her career, she has led strategic and evaluative initiatives that have shaped major global health programs and investments. Notable achievements include revising USAID’s maternal and child health investment frameworks to align with the Sustainable Development Goals, evaluating USAID’s flagship maternal and child health program, and designing a $1 billion successor strategy. She has also held leadership positions at Corus International and Abt Associates, managing global health and economic development portfolios across West Africa, francophone Central Africa, North Africa, and the Middle East. She uses a stethoscope to carefully listen to the child’s breathing. She determines the boy has a virus and calls a doctor for a teleconsultation. She often uses a mobile application called iLearn, which was developed by Jhpiego and adopted by the government of Nagaland. for Jhpiego’s NISHTHA project, meets with Rongsenlila to review data on a mobile phone and discuss the health center’s cases and progress. As they pour over data, Rongsenlila updates a chart posted on the center’s wall for her whole team to see. pharmacy. Unfortunately, our mother passed away the same year. My siblings and I had to vacate our house and I moved to Hawasa to live with my older sister.” — Albab Woyesa\u003C/p>\n\u003C/blockquote>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Albab was determined to pursue her dream of becoming a pharmacist despite her financial struggles. She enrolled in Pharma Health Sciences College (Pharma College) in Hawasa as a transfer student and began classes. “I wasn’t sure where the fees would come from and this made me worry a lot,” Albab adds. \u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Money wasn’t the only concern. Albab thought the learning experience might be different from her previous school. But what she found was a positive change. Video tutorials complimented lectures, most classes had hands-on lab sessions, and the trainers encouraged group work and discussions, which helped Albab adjust and catch up quickly. She found the hands-on practice to be a plus. \u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cdiv class=\"wp-block-buttons is-content-justification-center is-layout-flex wp-container-core-buttons-is-layout-fe48e5de wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n\u003Cdiv class=\"wp-block-button\">\u003Ca class=\"wp-block-button__link wp-element-button\">\u003Cstrong>Job satisfaction of Ethiopian health workers\u003C/strong>\u003C/a>\u003C/div>\n\u003C/div>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pharma College is one of 26 higher education institutions in Ethiopia supported by Jhpiego’s Health Workforce Integrated Project (HWIP). The US Agency for International Development (USAID)-funded project focuses on improving education for health workers in key professions such as medicine, nursing and midwifery, anaesthesia, public health, pharmacy, and medical laboratory.  \u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Prioritizing the quality of the health workforce is a key step to improve the coverage and quality of essential health services. Through gender transformative activities—a training, mentoring, and experiential learning package of 12 different interventions developed by the Ministry of Health—students receive education, skills, and support to provide competent and confident person-centered care that helps engage clients in their health. With help from HWIP to strengthen gender offices in institutions such as Pharma College, gender transformative activities increased from 28% to 72%. According to USAID\u003Csup>1\u003C/sup>, as girls grow older, school participation becomes increasingly difficult as it takes time away from essential income generating activities. Only 35% of undergraduate university students are female and 5% drop out in the first year. A 2020 baseline report conducted by HWIP revealed gender disparities in student enrollment, graduation, and dropout rates, which disfavored females.  \u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Albab had an opportunity others did not. Pharma College has a gender club and her classmates encouraged her to join it. The gender club focuses on providing peer-to-peer support, organizing learning sessions and strengthening support systems for students with financial, academic, and social challenges. Topics covered during the sessions include communications, negotiation skills and gender-based violence. At the gender club, Albab met Mela Girma who was trained by Jhpiego on gender transformative activities. \u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“I remember when Albab joined [the club]. She was quiet and didn’t talk much,” says Mela. “We usually have small group sessions that give everyone an opportunity to talk and build confidence. After some sessions, Albab gained confidence to talk about her academic financial challenges. She had good grades but was worried that she would (have to) drop out of school,” adds Mela. “The gender club here allows young women to have their own space and forum where they can feel seen, heard and equipped with the right information.”  \u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Albab applied for a scholarship offered by the campus administration, which she learned about through the gender club. A few weeks later, she learned her application was successful and she received a tuition scholarship for the rest of the coursework. “This scholarship has done so much for me. I can concentrate on my studies and perform well without worrying,” she says. Albab was one of 10 students at the college who received a tuition scholarship through the college fund. In a few months, she will join about 600 students as she graduates as a trained pharmacist.  \u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pharmacy professionals play a key role in health workforce availability and management of priority health conditions such as tuberculosis, maternal and child health and malaria. High attrition rates and pharmacist shortages are major challenges in delivering clinical pharmacy services.  \u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the second year of the project, HWIP supported 49 health facilities to assess their staffing requirements and hired 2,221 professionals—831 of whom were women—including 130 in pharmacy and 122 in medical laboratory positions. So, I’ve always had the idea of a career that would improve communities.” Diego Raymundo\u003C/p>\n\u003C/blockquote>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“The health care scenario in Guatemala is different [from other countries],” he says. “I preferred to focus on the reality and [how to use the] basic equipment we have in our health system.” \u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although Guatemala has the \u003Ca href=\"https://www.worldbank.org/en/country/guatemala/overview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">largest economy in Central America\u003C/a>, the government only spends around \u003Ca href=\"https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/SH.XPD.GHED.PC.CD?locations=GT&most_recent_value_desc=false\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">$110 on health care\u003C/a> per person each year. Since many of its citizens rely on public health services, including almost half of the country’s population who live in rural areas, this underspending means many Guatemalans have trouble accessing the health services they need. Jhpiego supports the Ministry of Public Health and Welfare to improve its care and management models. This includes implementing training sessions on how to manage health facilities. As a community leader and supervisor of several health posts, Diego attends training sessions and implements measures to ensure each health post maintains the hygiene standards required for pregnant women and babies and follows the guidelines for maternal emergencies and referral of complicated cases to regional hospitals. \u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Diego represents one of the approximately 38,000 nurses in Guatemala (the country \u003Ca href=\"https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/SH.MED.NUMW.P3?locations=GT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">has 2.2 nurses and midwives per 1,000 people\u003C/a> vs 8.2 per 1,000 people in the U.S.). After receiving his nursing degree at the University of San Carlos in Quetzaltenango, Diego and his wife moved to Nebaj, a small town in the Quiché region. This is the basis of building trust with people in each community.” \u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Diego and many other nurses in the region, meetings with clients aren’t just about treating a person’s immediate needs. They’re also about identifying and preventing future health issues. \u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“If we find something that’s not normal, like the vital signs, we refer clients for timely attention,” says Diego. “We try to get ahead before any event occurs that may affect the life of each person or even in the family.” \u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cfigure leave happy and grateful for the treatment they received, that is priceless,” he says. “The community shows us respect and support for our work when they attend check-ups and vaccination After vaccination, I have seen the change.” — Sister Colette, Head of Rubungo Health Centre\u003C/p>\n\u003C/blockquote>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Enough to be scared\u003C/h2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Daniel Sibomana, a 51-year-old father of five in a community just outside of Kigali, Rwanda, knew very little about COVID-19 when it was declared a pandemic. In fact, he didn’t believe in it—until he began to see how ill the virus made some of his friends. He didn’t know much, but he knew enough to be scared.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Living with high blood pressure, Daniel was at higher risk of severe COVID-19. Fortunately for him, people living with such health conditions during the pandemic were a priority for the U.S. Agency for International Development’s Reaching Impact, Saturation, and Epidemic Control (RISE)’s Test-to-Treat program in Kigali. Together with the Government of Rwanda and Rinda Ubuzima, a local nongovernmental organization known for excellent communication and awareness-raising activities, health care providers are reaching people in the community like Daniel who are at higher risk—providing them with COVID-19 education, testing and treatment.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the Test-to-Treat strategy, adults who test positive for COVID-19 and are at high risk of severe COVID-19 take antiviral medicine within five days of their first symptoms. Starting treatment early can lessen the severity of illness, keeping older adults and those with conditions such as diabetes, hypertension or HIV out of the hospital.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“The message was very clear, and clarified all the misconceptions I had heard about the virus before. I was among the first individuals to make a decision to be vaccinated when the program started here at Rubungo,” said Daniel at a return visit for COVID-19 testing.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He added, “I remember upon arrival to the health center to monitor my blood pressure, the community educator provided us with education on COVID-19 protection measures. The Test-to-Treat program followed these efforts, first introducing oral antivirals as a key strategy to help save lives, then ensuring that tens of thousands of the people most at risk received COVID-19 testing, and enrolling two-thirds of those who tested positive into COVID-19 antiviral treatment to help keep hospitalizations low.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Community partners forge connections\u003C/h2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To effectively implement the Test-to-Treat program through RISE, Jhpiego Rwanda partnered with Rinda Ubuzima. This local organization brought strong expertise and local connections to the project, mobilizing and engaging communities to get vaccinated, boosted, tested and treated for COVID-19 in eight districts across the country.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Aline Umutoni Uwizera, a community engagement manager at Rinda Ubuzima, meets daily with clients who are at high risk: people who are unvaccinated, living with noncommunicable diseases or living with HIV.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When these clients go to their local health centers for treatment, Aline and her colleagues seize the opportunity to share information about COVID-19: what it is, its symptoms, treatment and the importance of vaccinations.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“It is a huge milestone, and so fulfilling to witness how people from high-risk groups are getting educated and receive treatment they need. They’re getting vaccinated against COVID-19 for free and willingly,” Aline said.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rinda Ubuzima works closely with Jhpiego experts in Rwanda, along with health facilities and local government authorities. The partnership is critical. Aline and her colleagues work toward sustainable transformation in their communities, while Jhpiego transfers valuable skills and expertise gained from decades of implementing programs against infectious diseases worldwide.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Together with leaders of local health centers like Sister Colette, head nurse at Rubungo Health Centre, they’re ensuring that Rwandan communities have every opportunity to thrive.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“I see how the community is interested to be tested and vaccinated, because they have seen the importance of living free from the constant presence of the disease,” Sister Colette said.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A friendly booster\u003C/h2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Alphonsine is married, with nine children, and has spent more than a decade living with high blood pressure. In 2021, she was vaccinated against COVID-19, and thought nothing more of it.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But in January 2023, as Alphonsine sat waiting for her monthly appointment at Rubungo Health Centre, she listened to health educators, led by Rinda Ubuzima leaders and health center staff. They explained the importance of being fully vaccinated, including boosters, for people in high-risk groups. She decided to get a booster dose that day.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“I chose to share the knowledge and understanding with my family and my neighbors. There used to be rumors about vaccines, that they were intended to kill people. I talked to my children, who are also talking to their children about getting vaccinated. My whole family is now fully vaccinated,” Alphonsine said.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With leadership from Rwanda’s Ministry of Health, the RISE partnership is thriving—supporting 15 health centers and nine hospitals across Kigali and beyond. class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rain was falling on her island home in Lake Bangweulu when Linda Bwembya’s labor pains began. She sought care at the local health center, where she fully expected to give birth as she had with her first child. But a Jhpiego-trained nurse examined Linda and realized the young mother had a potentially life-threatening complication, obstructed labor. The nurse recommended Linda be immediately transported to a larger health facility — a boat ride away. \u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Scared of what would happen next, Linda agreed to make the journey. While in transit, the boat got lost in a heavy rain and had to anchor for the night. By the time the boat arrived on shore, nearly 24 hours later, Linda and her baby were in distress. Dr. Nicholas Sakala, who met the boat when it arrived, examined Linda, recognized the gravity of the situation, and decided to accompany her to the nearest hospital where she could get a cesarean section. \u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr. Sakala was ready to face the next challenge because of the training and mentorship in emergency obstetric and newborn care he received through the U.S. Agency for International Development-funded Family Health and Nutrition Activity, led by Jhpiego.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As they waited for an ambulance, Dr. Sakala monitored Linda’s condition. \u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cblockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“I noticed the baby crowning . . . [and] I immediately conducted the delivery on the boat. The [umbilical] cord was around the neck two times and I quickly slipped it over the baby’s head to free the neck. Upon delivery, the baby could not cry. I started neonatal resuscitation and the baby cried.” — Dr. Nicholas Sakala\u003C/p>\n\u003C/blockquote>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He then turned his attention to Linda, who was weak and bleeding heavily. Dr. Sakala managed to control the bleeding and prepared mother and baby for the next leg of the journey—a 90-minute ride to Samfya District Hospital. Recalling Isaiah’s birth, Linda thanked Dr. Sakala for “saving my life and that of my baby.”\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“Had it not been for him, both my baby and I would not have been alive today,” she said. “He did a commendable job and I am always grateful to him.”\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For his part, Dr. Sakala credited the emergency preparedness training he received in managing complications at birth as well as the mentorship for strengthening his skills and confidence, “yielding the desired results in saving the lives of the women and the babies.”\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u003Cem>The Family and Nutrition Activity is a five-year project focused on strengthening the capacity of the Zambian public health system to sustainably deliver reproductive, maternal, newborn, child and adolescent health and nutrition services through improving service-delivery capacity, health management and financial systems, and engagement of communities in their health. This project works in tandem with the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency’s program to strengthen continuum of care. Other consortium partners include Churches Health Association of Zambia, Copper Rose Zambia, Johns Hopkins University International Vaccine Access Center and Bloomberg School of Public Health, the Manoff Group and Thinkwell.\u003C/em>\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u003Cem>Francis Kaira is the knowledge management and communications officer and Charity Bwalya serves as
