Selected Achievements

  • Group antenatal care (G-ANC) was introduced in Benin in 20 health facilities in Atlantique Department, and more than 1,085 pregnant women participated in at least one G-ANC meeting in the first eight months of implementation (April to December 2021).

  • To broaden access to DMPA-SC, an injectable contraceptive known as Sayana Press®, Jhpiego collaborated with the Ministry of Health, USAID and other partners to develop a scale-up plan validated by the Ministry and now in effect. The plan integrates high-impact approaches such as self-injection, delegation of tasks, service integration and distribution of DMPA-SC via new channels such as private clinics and pharmacies.

Our Work in Benin

Improving Access, Quality, and Equity of Health Services

By boosting health worker skills where needs are most critical, the ARS 3 Project is building long-term resilience so that by 2026, every Beninese mother and child can receive quality care, without exception.

  • Jhpiego works in with four departments across nine key health zones to provide direct quality assurance to more than 50,000 people, ensuring that the care provided meets international standards for safety and effectiveness.

  • Benin reduced neonatal mortality from 30 to 23 deaths per 1,000 live births between 2017 and 2022 by implementing Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care standards and upgrading technical medical facilities.

  • For the first time, the country has recorded two consecutive years with fewer than 1,000 maternal deaths annually, confirming the direct impact of investments in Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care and the continuous professional development of health workers.

"Clinical mentoring taught me to listen without judging, to encourage without imposing, to support without directing. Today, I am a stronger, more aware, and more serene professional. I have understood that leadership does not lie in shining alone, but in the ability to make my younger sisters shine."
— Agbodjeloiu Mauricette, Community Health Worker in Bassila
